Karen Papacek Fine Art

After graduating from DDIAE (University of Southern Queensland) with a degree in Creative Arts in 1978, 11 years working, teaching and exhibiting in Brisbane, Australia, Papacek moved to Barcelona, Spain in 1990. In 1991 her Barcelona collection ‘A Rose for the Beast of Burden’ was installed at the Australian Embassy in Paris and subsequently toured Australia. This was the beginning of 30 years of international professional practice. Her work has been shown in Europe, the USA and Australia.

Fundamentally a figurative symbolist, she has focused on environmental issues since the late 1980’s.

Her main creative process is concentrated on drawing, painting, sculpture and artist books often in series or installation form.

Since her ‘Safe House’ installation (941 individual works of drawing and text,

Austral Gallery, St Louis, USA, 1993) she has continued to explore the interactive space with large scale installations and public sculptures.

The ‘Drawing Installation Project’ she created in 1994, has been a foundation for groups with severe disabilities as well as an educational aid for artistic expression and team building for special needs groups.
